The spectacular and diverse nature of North Mayo’s coastline has long attracted a wide variety of visitors all year round. Beaches such as Lacken Strand, Ross Strand and Enniscrone just over County Sligo border have been awarded Blue Flags from the EU as a mark of the cleanliness of their waters.
Golf Courses
Meet the challenge of two great championship golf links courses (Enniscrone and Carne) and one excellent parkland course (Ballina Golf Course) while experiencing a culture which is enchanting and unique. Celebrate with people who know how to enjoy themselves and who will ensure that you have the time of your life!
Game Angling
Much of North Mayo is drained by the world famous River Moy and its tributaries which comprise Ireland's most prolific salmon angling waters. The world-famous Moy Fishery at Ballina, which is managed by Inland Fisheries Ireland - Ballina, comprises some of the world's most sought-after salmon angling pools, including the Ridge Pool which has recorded up to 5,000 salmon to rod and line in a single season.
Lough Conn, one of the great western lakes, is part off the Moy system and is noted mainly for its wild brown trout fishing. It is during the Mayfly period that Lough Conn has earned its reputation as one of Ireland's top quality trout lakes but it can produce quality trout any time from the start of the season in mid February to the end of September.
It also produces salmon, mostly to trolling, throughout the season.
Sea Angling
For the sea angler, North Mayo offers top class boat and shore fishing and up to 34 species of fish have been recorded by anglers.
The main deep sea angling centres are Belmullet, and Killala.
Boats are available for hire for a whole or half-day, with excellent skippers, who are only too happy to advise. For those who have never gone sea fishing before, the waters around the North Mayo coast are a great place to begin.
Shore angling is becoming increasingly popular with fishing carried out from numerous, beaches piers and rocky outcrops. There are up to 50 recognised shore marks and the best stands are sign posted.
The area is also noted for its high-quality saltwater fly fishing.
