» A Day Out (1011)

»»» County Galway (62)Dartfield is seeped in Irish history. The original house was built in 1827 by Henry Blake a member of one of the historical tribes of Galway. The museum buildings were redesigned from the old courtyard in the grounds of Dartfield house. In 1993 Dartfield was bought by Willie Leahy, a local horseman and the owner of the famous Connemara Trail riding holiday, to expand his riding holiday business.
Exhibits:
There are exhibits of historic farm machinery and carriages which will give visitors an insight into the vital role played by the Irish horse throughout history. Amongst the historic carriages is a Brougham which once belonged to Lillie Langry.
Within the museum complex there are displays that show what life was like in the countryside with exhibits of carriages, farm machinery and cars as well as showing the old rural way of life. Discover what it was like to live in an old country cottage, or endure the famine. In conjunction with Galway University, there is a fabulous exhibition of the geology of Connemara, some of the rocks in this display are over 300 million years old. The museum has extensive galleries which are easily explored.
The tour lasts approximately 90 minutes, but please allow extra time for treasure hunt/farm walk/nature trail.
Horsepower is also exhibited at the museum. Around 1899 the horse began to see his work load lessening with the invention of the Horseless carriage. Dartfield houses a wide range of veteran cars dating from 1901 – 1930 during this period the Horseless Carriage became known as the motor car. 2008 is the 100th Anniversary of Ford Model T’s. Henry Ford, a farmer’s son from Cork was the original Founder of the Ford Car Company. The Model T Ford was the most Famous Car of it's time manufactured in 1908 - 1927. 16 Million Model T cars were manufactured in total by Ford. Dartfield is commemorating this with a fantastic exhibition of veteran cars.
Horse Riding:
The museum is surrounded by an event course set in 350 acres of gently rolling parkland. The course is designed to suit all levels of ability from those who want to improve their riding skills to the adrenalin junkies who want to test their skill over the advanced fences. Lessons are also available for riding, or jumping tuition.
Schools:
Dartfield is a world away from traditional school tours. Here school visits are designed specifically to educate, stimulate and fascinate children of all ages.
The education department at Dartfield works alongside the school curriculum to ensure that schools have maximum learning opportunities alongside value for money within a safe, fun environment.

Work charts are available to schools to be completed both before and after a visit to ensure that the maximum benefit is gained from Dartfield.
Teachers are welcome to visit the museum at any time to discuss programmes and see the facilities. There is already an extensive range of educational programmes, but Dartfield are more than happy to devise a programme to teacher’s specifications.

During the summer months there is the Pony Camp where youngsters can come to the museum and ‘own’ a pony for the duration of the camp.
Riding lessons are available on safe and experienced ponies, from caring and professional teachers.
