»»» County Down (25)Andrew found the existing Georgian house too modest for his ambitions,(he had become Mayor of Belfast at the time of his purchase), and so he commissioned the architect and fellow Belfast City councellor, Charles (later Sir Charles) Lanyon, to build something more in keeping with his perceived status.
The result is the Victorian Italianate Palazzo that you see today, arguably the finest of Lanyon's country houses. The original Springvale House was not demolished but was included within the structure of the new house. Indeed, some of the original door lintels and arches can still be seen in the basement and cellars of the house. Restoration has been ongoing for many years, having commenced in the late 1950s - early 1960s.
Lanyon was responsible for much of Northern Ireland's finest built heritage, including the main buildings of the Queen's University and the Customs House, both in Belfast; Ballyscullion Park, in Co Londonderry, and two other great houses, Drenagh, near Limavady, and Dunderave at Bushmills on the North Antrim Coast.
As County Architect, he was also responsible for the magnificent Antrim Coast Road. Construction took about six years, with the works being completed in around 1852.
Interior of Ballywalter Park
The Inner Hall
A magnificent room, 60’ long, reaching to the full height of the house, and with a magnificent stained glass cupola above the grand staircase.
The Drawing Room
A light, bright room reaching to the full height of the south bow wing, and with windows facing south and west. French windows lead out onto a sunny terrace, with level raised lawns – an ideal spot for displays and exhibitions.
The Dining Room
The perfect location for that formal dinner, with the original dining table being able to seat up to 24 persons. The Dining Room is another warm and bright room, with large windows facing west.
The Library
The sumptuous and indeed luxurious surroundings of the Library make it an extremely comfortable place to relax and unwind, and is particularly suitable for after-dinner coffee and drinks.
The Billiard Room & Smoking Room
Two very traditional rooms, once but now no longer a male preserve, allow for a little gentle snooker in the evening, perhaps over a glass of brandy and a cigar.
The Conservatory
The ideal spot for a drinks reception in the summer months, where guests can relax with a glass of champagne amidst the tropical splendour of exotic plants growing in Lanyon’s spectacular domed Conservatory. The Conservatory also provides an alternative location for that more informal summer supper, with an opportunity to wander through double doors out into the landscaped and extensive pleasure grounds.
